The City of Melville has welcomed legendary Australian singer, musical artist, and accomplished watercolourist Kim Salmon to their creative residency program for his first exhibition in Western Australia.

Located within the Hickey Street Creative Precinct at Yagan Mia Wireless Hill, the residency allows artists to spend time in situ, absorbing the site’s long and ancient historical connection to signals and communication, and sense of place, culminating in a body of work to exhibit alongside selected pieces from the artist’s existing body of work.

An art student in the early ‘70s, Salmon dabbled in rock ‘n’ roll and soon got hijacked by a life in punk rock, but his fascination for watercolour never wavered and although busy with a life on the road, he never stopped painting and drawing.

The residency will culminate in an exhibition to be held at the top of the hill in Wireless Hill Museum, the former Engine Room of the old Applecross Wireless Station, a nationally significant site to Australian telecommunications and engineering heritage.

Smoke Signals to Aliens runs from Saturday, 1 April to Sunday, 16 April 2023.
