Crown Ruler is proud to present a celestial afternoon of music featuring Laraaji. Restaurant & doors open 1:30pm.
Orange clad and cloud-levelled in nature, New-Age icon Laraaji is a masterful navigator of music and meditation. Embarking on his creative path at Howard University (an institution primarily dedicated to serving and educating black students prior to the civil rights movement), he moved to New York in the 60s to pursue a brief career stand-up comedy & acting, which included an appearance in Robert Downey Sr.’s political cult-comedy Putney Swope.
A decade later, Laraaji began exploring studies of mysticism & meditation. Following a particularly resonant experience with Musica Universalis (also known as Music of the Spheres) and his now signature instrument—the zither—a devotion to music was bestowed on him. He busked along the streets of Brooklyn, selling self-recorded tapes and experimenting with open tuning and musical meditation, when one Brian Eno’s ears pricked up along the sidewalk of Washington Square Park. Eno extended the invitation to contribute to his seminal Ambient series, one of the first and most widely-recognised of many recorded works on Laraaji’s massive list of releases for various labels, the most recent being 2017’s Bring On The Sun.
To welcome you into the space and see you off after, we think the turntables deserve no less than Hani Hanbali to help tell the story.
